Andy pays tribute to Percy Sledge

Andy has paid tribute to one of the all-time great R&B and soul singers Percy Sledge, who passed away on April 14th aged 74. Best known for his 1966 international No.1 hit ‘When a Man Loves a Woman’, he will always be remembered for his rich, soulful voice and incredible stage presence.

Sledge’s breakout hit has been praised as one of the greatest songs ever recorded, and even reached number two when it was re-released in 1987 after appearing in Platoon. The soul superstar will always be associated with the song,

which played a major role in him continuing a worldwide touring schedule where he averaged 100 shows a year. His other chart successes included ‘Warm and Tender Love’, ‘It Tears Me Up’ and ‘Take Time to Know Her’.

Andy’s career has always been inspired by the great soul and R&B stars, and he covered Sledge’s classic hit on the final of The X Factor. It also featured on his platinum-selling debut album The Impossible Dream in 2006 which reached number two in the UK Album Charts.

Andy said: “I can’t believe the legend that is Percy Sledge has left us, I’m sure we’ll not see his like again. ‘When a Man Loves a Woman’ was a song I sang on the final of The X Factor in 2005 which the fans loved. Rest in peace, Percy.”

Andy is currently on tour starring in the revival of Godspell, which is visiting theatres all over the country.
